About FLM and FLGS
Program Description
The STEP Center’s preparation institutes prepare current teachers to add a Foundational Level Mathematics (FLM) or Foundational Level General Science (FLGS) Single Subject Teaching Credential to their existing multiple or single subject credential. The institutes also prepare prospective or incoming Sonoma State single subject teaching candidates to meet the subject matter competency requirement through the California Subject Examination for Teachers (or CSET) option. Teachers can also take an institute as professional development to deepen their content knowledge and/or pedagogy.
Each institute consists of hands-on and minds-on workshops that prepare you for the knowledge and skills needed to successfully pass the Mathematics CSET Subtests I and II (FLM) or the Science CSET Subtest I (FLGS).
For current teachers, each institute also includes the required 3-unit secondary method/pedagogy course in Mathematics or Science.
Program Costs and Credits
There is no fee to participate. You will earn 3 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for each completed workshop and 3 academic units for passing the appropriate secondary Mathematics or Science Content/Pedagogy course (EDSS 444: Curriculum, Instruction).
You are responsible for paying for any workshop/course texts, the CSET registration fee, credential fee, and parking.
The Foundational Level Mathematics Preparation Institute:
The FLM Credential authorizes you to teach all mathematics except for trigonometry and calculus. The FLM Preparation Institute will actively engage participants in a hands-on and minds-on review of algebra, geometry, number theory, and statistics. The secondary mathematics method/pedagogy course (EDSS 444) goes deeper into evidence-based approaches for teaching Common Core Math and using the California Mathematics Framework to guide instruction for diverse learners.
You have the flexibility to take part or all of the institute workshops and method/pedagogy (EDSS 444) course.
Prospective or incoming Sonoma State single subject candidates can only apply for the CSET workshops since you will be taking EDSS 444 as part of your credential program coursework.
The Foundational Level General Science Preparation Institute:
The FLGS Credential authorizes you to teach self-contained integrated science (up through Grade 8), general science, and introductory science courses. It does not authorize you to teach a self-contained Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, or Physics course.
The FLGS Preparation Institute will actively engage participants in a hands-on and minds-on review of core life science, physical science, and earth and space science ideas that are all aligned to Next Generation Science Standards. The secondary science method/pedagogy course (EDSS 444) goes deeper into evidence-based approaches for teaching Next Generation Science Standards to diverse learners.
You have the flexibility to take part or all of the institute workshops and method/pedagogy (EDSS 444) course.
Prospective or incoming Sonoma State single subject candidates can only apply for the CSET workshops since you will be taking EDSS 444 as part of your credential program coursework.
